Our kitchen design process: part two
February 2023Redesigning a kitchen is certainly a labour of love and is a process that involves many hours of designing and planning, organising and normally a hurdle or two along the way! The end result is truly always worth it and seeing a project transform from the bare bones to a beautiful kitchen space is so very rewarding.
We often get asked about the process, from design through to fitting, so we thought it would be useful to go through our kitchen design process in a little more detail for those considering embarking on the journey of a bespoke handmade kitchen. In this blog post we’ll go through our kitchen design process and what you should expect along the way.
Booking a project in
To book your project into our diary and secure the date we ask for a 10% deposit of the cabinetry cost. Once this has been received, we can continue working with you on the design and discuss alterations you may wish to make as well as talking through cabinetry colours, ironmongery and worktops. We also send across a schedule of works that includes important dates or deadlines, when payments are due and also touches on how we expect the room to be prior to the kitchen installation beginning.
Designing a bespoke kitchen is a process that takes time and consideration – we will happily meet you on site or you can visit the workshop again to chat through the design in person. We’ll put together an updated design pack with cabinetry designs and floorplans for you to pass onto builders and other trades and if needed an updated estimate will be sent to accommodate any alterations made. We ask for a list of the appliances you are purchasing to confirm these will work with the design.
Finalising design and planning
8 weeks before your kitchen fit date, we do a final site visit to confirm the measurements of the space. If any tweaks are needed to be made to the cabinetry measurements they will be made at this point before the construction begins. From this point no changes or alterations can be made to the design as your bespoke kitchen is now in production! 8 weeks prior to fitting is also when we also ask for the next instalment of 40%. One week before your fit date, the final 50% of the cabinetry cost is due.
As a small business we are constantly juggling projects all of which are moving at different paces and are working to individual schedules – we appreciate delays are common in this industry however we always ask our clients to keep in touch during the months leading up to their kitchen fit so we can do our upmost to accommodate delays.
Fitting
When the time comes to install your bespoke kitchen, we ask for the room to be fully finished and clear from other trades; windows in, electrics and plumbing in place, walls plastered and decorated, floor down and heating on. We need to be the last trade in to ensure your handmade cabinetry is fitted without compromise. We tend to allow around 5-10 days for the cabinetry to be fitted (depending on the size of the project) and during this time the worktop is also templated.
Once the fitting is complete, our team of hand painters will be on site to complete the final part of the process which can take between 5-7 days depending on the design. The hand painting is such an exciting part of the process as the vision for the space truly takes shape and we always love to pop by and see the design as it comes to life throughout the fitting process. On completion of hand painting we ask for our final payment of our fitting fee to be settled.
After the cabinetry is fitted and painted and the worktop is installed, we then advise for you to arrange for your appliances to be fitted.
If you have any questions regarding our kitchen design process please don’t hesitate to get in touch and we’d happily answer any questions!
